I was full on smiling when I learned that I would be attending a
Drive Your Dream 2500 HP Tour courtesy of an anniversary gift from my lovely wife. Along with seat time in the
Ferrari F430,
Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder,
Bentley Continental GT, and brand new Aston Martin V-8 Vantage Convertible – here at last was my chance to
drive the 2007 BMW M6 Convertible. The
daylong exotic car tours allow car enthusiasts to pilot five of the world’s finest cars back-to-back on some of Texas’ most scenic and challenging roadways.
I’ve always been partial to
BMWs and will gladly share my impressions of the car I was lucky enough to drive first on my Drive Your Dream Tour in Dallas. After a thorough briefing on the BMW from the Tour Director, I knew it wouldn’t be long before I experienced the BMW M6.
The wind picked up, and I felt a tingle of anticipation as I imagined myself piloting the
BMW M6. The cool dark lines of the elite BMW reminded me of the effortless glide of a Mako shark in crystal water. I expected the BMW to be as natural a performer on the curvy roads of the North Texas Hill County.
I took a minute to survey the
BMW Convertible M6 from every angle, aware of my desire to etch the clean lines of the low-slung sports car into my memory. My nostrils filled with the intoxicating smell of the Merino leather as my eyes drank in the sleek interior with its burnished wood trim.
Trying hard to remain nonchalant, I adjusted the16-position headrest, lumbar support, and seat and did a quick inventory of the nicely laid out controls. I felt like an F-16 pilot doing a preflight check. I touched the ignition, and felt the rumbling growl of a tiger as the German roadster came to life. As I mumbled a prayer of thanks to the wife who had given me the
perfect anniversary gift for a car guy, I was already imagining what the luxury
BMW M6 Convertible might be capable of on a deserted stretch of Dallas highway if I were to touch the power button and unleash the BMW at full throttle.
With the top down and the sun of early spring pouring down on me, I couldn’t resist putting a little pressure on the accelerator just to hear the engine note of the V-10. Trust me the M6 emits engine noise that is a symphony to any confirmed gearhead. The
new BMW M6 engine churns out twice the power of the V-8 that powered the M6 in 1989. Even idling, the M6’s engine sounds are inviting. With the top down at full throttle, the engine note is nothing short of glorious.
The M-6 is everything that you would expect from the elite German engineers of the
Bavarian Motor Works. With a long straight stretch of highway before me, I punched the accelerator and my head snapped back hard as the hairy-chested M6 rocketed from a standstill to 60 MPH in something that felt faster than the 4.6 seconds that the spec sheet advertises.
The automatic transmission shifts easily through the whole range of acceleration. The 5.0-liter V-10 requires close attention to the speedometer if you intend to avoid unwanted attention from Johnny Law. The new
M6 BMW is designed for the “as fast as you care to go” world of the Autobahn, not for Texas roads marked with speed limit signs.
As heart pounding as the M6’s performance is in acceleration, the handling is what earns this car its stripes as BMW’s elite roadster! The North Texas Hill County was the perfect place for BMW’s M6 to show why so many drivers believe that
BMW makes the best sports cars in the world. It’s flawless and almost impossibly nimble for a V-10 powered beast. The BMW M6’s stability control allows for a minimum of wheel slippage in wide or tight turns at high speed. With the flat turning,
road-hugging capabilities of the M6, I felt confident and in control even in the tightest of turning scenarios.
Having spent just over a half an hour putting this pristine convertible through the paces, I know understand the BMW mystique much better. I know why the BMW M6 earns accolades from participants in the 2500 HP exotic car tour for its remarkable road manners. The M-6 is also popular with members of the premier exotic and
luxury car sharing club in Dallas because it is perfect for making a favorable impression on prospects or clients. Even in a line up with the world’s greatest cars on a 2500 HP Tour, this BMW M6 turns heads.
I reached the checkpoint where I was to park the BMW and exchange it for another exotic. I could still feel the adrenaline rush, but mingled with the satisfaction that an athlete feels from having run a good race. Driving the 2007
BMW M6 Convertible left me in the exclusive group that can say I’ve driven the ultimate 2+2 BMW performance convertible.
